Jenny Bache has been fascinated by plants since childhood in
Aberdeenshire, where she spent hours drawing specimens from the woods
near her home. Although she trained as a teacher and raised four children,
her passion for illustrating fungi, flowers, and plants remained constant. In
2018, after four years of study, she achieved a Diploma with distinction in
Botanical Illustration at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, gaining
knowledge of plant ecology alongside advanced painting techniques.
Jenny is drawn to species often overlooked, aiming to reveal their colours,
structures, and hidden complexity. Her compositions sometimes depart
from natural arrangements to highlight their uniqueness. A painting of a
ginger species is included in the RBGE Florilegium, and she exhibits
locally, including participation in the Wirral Open Studio Tour.
Her practice focuses on closely observed, to-scale illustrations created
directly from plants. Watercolour is her primary medium, applied in layered
washes to achieve depth and fine detail, though she also works with
coloured pencils, pen, and ink. From her eco studio in Wirral, Jenny
continues to explore and celebrate the unusual and rare in the plant world.
